Chinese Language Day
Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Preschool offers Chinese immersion programme for students to develop interest and confidence in the Chinese language.
This date was established by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 2010, with the wish of celebrating multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as promoting equal use of all of its official working languages six (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) throughout the organisation.
The date corresponds to the start of “Guyu” (谷雨) solar term (tail end of Spring) in the Chinese calendar, in honour of Cangjie. As legend has it, when Cangjie (仓颉) invented Chinese characters, the deities and ghosts cried and it rained millet; the word "Guyu" also literally means "rain of mille.
At Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Cultural Academy, we seek to impart practical mastery of the language through active learning, such as sharing moral values through stories in Di Zi Gui 弟子规, singing and reciting Tang poems, learning characters through calligraphy and Chinese speech and drama.
School After School Student Care Centre educate students on our Chinese moral and values through the Di Zi Gui lessons.
Bring your child to cultural events so that they can experience the wider context of the language, expose them to Chinese songs or comics or speak to them regularly in Mandarin e.g. during dinner time or play time.
Once your child has grasped enough Chinese vocabulary, he/she will be more confident to express themselves in the language. Combine that with a good foundation in Hanyu Pinyin, your child will be well-placed in the path to mastering the language.
